Dead fish: Swimming ban along Volos coastal area

The Central Port Authority of Volos decided on Monday to impose a swimming ban on a large breach front – to the east and west of the wider area of the city of Volos – due to the large quantities of dead fish washed up recently from Lake Karla in the waters of Pagasetic Gulf.

The Central Port Authority of Volos reportedly defines the area from the beach east of Agria beach in the east to the beach of Agios Georgios Kynigos in the west, which includes dozens of urban and peri-urban beaches and beaches of the Urban Complex of Volos. Among them are the beaches of  Anavros, Plakes, Nautikos Omilos, Akti Xenia, Alykes, Agios Stefanos, Amaryllis, Kritharia, Marathos, Amfanes.

Some of these beaches were awarded with Blue Flags that were removed last week, though.

As it was officially announced, the ban on swimming was due to the extraordinary phenomenon of the presence of dead fish and the ban is valid until the Service is informed by the competent Water Directorate of the Decentralized Administration of Thessaly about the laboratory-confirmed suitability of the waters.

Mayor of Volos, Achilleas Mpeos, also said about the beaches to citizens:

“Don’t listen to anyone. No one should go into the sea unless the Municipality of Volos issues an announcement. Laboratories will come from Athens and Thessaloniki and will take measurements from Lechonia to Aghialos in 15 places because no one can play with the health of the citizens.”

It is a private and a government agency that will take measurements.

At the same time, lifeguards will remain in their positions on the beaches to inform bathers about the swimming ban, while “No Swimming” signs will be placed  at the beaches along the entire length of the Municipality of Volos jurisdiction, the local authorities announced..

Residents and visitors will face “sanctions” if they violate the prohibition, authorities warned without elaborating, though.
