Illumination of Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion (video)

The emblematic Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was illuminated on Monday night in an event with the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and a concert by distinguished Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos.

The illumination of the famous temple in south-eastern Attica offers also a unique experience to ships passengers sailing in the area.

In a unique fusion of ancient heritage and modern art, the Ministry of Culture has taken the initiative to illuminate the iconic Temple of Poseidon at Sounion as it did with the illumination of the Acropolis of Athens in September 2020.

METLEN Energy & Metals sponsored the design and implementation of the lighting, as well as the event to promote the event, confirming its commitment to the promotion and protection of Greece’s cultural heritage.

The lighting is being curated by internationally acclaimed lighting designer Eleftheria Decaux, known for her award-winning work on the Acropolis and the opening of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The new lighting of the Sounio Temple highlights in a unique way the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument, giving it new dimensions.

Special care was taken to ensure that the visual experience of visitors to the archaeological site during the day would not be disturbed. All the elements of the installation and the lighting fixtures were placed in such a way that they do not obstruct the navigation and do not cause visual disturbance to the visitors.

The Illumination also offers a unique experience of all ship passengers sailing to  the port of Piraeus or fromPiraeus to the islands in the evening and at night.

The illumination evening culminated with a concert by Stavros Xarchakos,  accompanied by leading Greek artists such as Dimitris Basis, Iro Saia, and Zacharias Karounis, a multi-member choir, and orchestra, as well as the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra.
