Kamala Harris or Donald Trump? Calm waters or unpredictable policies? Athens is drafting the next day scenarios stressing at the same time that “Greece and the US have strategic relations that will not be affected” whether Democrat Harris or Republican Trump will win the US elections 2024.
“Regardless of the election result, Greece and the US have a strategic relation that will not be affected,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday in a meeting with the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
On her part, the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, noted “our country will work with whatever president the US people elect.”
The Greek government has analyzed both scenarios and depending on the result they will proceed with the next steps, daily ethnos.gr reported.
“We will adapt and work with whoever is elected, precisely because the strategic core of the relationship between the United States and Greece will not be called into question by either Mr. Trump or Ms. HarrisGrace, in the event that one or the other is elected,” PM Mitsotakis noted recently. He pointed out, “the opinion that Greece is a pillar of stability, a strategic partner of the United States – Cyprus is now added to this relationship, and with our own small assistance – is an opinion held by Senators and Members of Parliament and from the two parties.”
Harris will not stir the waters – New landscape with Trump
A potential victory of Kamala Harris is considered not to disturb the waters, as it is expected that it will generally proceed in the same context. Of course, in the event of a Democratic victory, it also matters which persons will take on critical positions. However, it is most likely that there will be no surprises in the policy that will be followed in relation to the EU, while drastic changes should not be expected in a matter of interest to Athens which is none other than the relations with Turkey
A possible victory of Donald Trump will mean a new landscape and of course it will be interesting which persons they will choose for key positions. For example, the former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo – with whom Kyriakos Mitsotakis met a few days ago – is considered likely to assume the duties of Minister of Defense or the position of National Security Advisor. It is recalled that about a month ago the Prime Minister had a working breakfast at his home in Chania with a group of senators from the Republican Party and the Minister of National Defense also participated in the meeting
If Mr. Trump prevails, it remains to be seen what policy he will adopt in critical matters, such as: in the field of the economy (e.g. if tariffs of 10% to 20% will be imposed on everything imported into the USA) but also in the field of foreign policy (for example, how it will move regarding Ukraine and the Middle East). Also, in such an eventuality, it remains to be seen how the relations of the USA with Turkey will be affected and how Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attempt to move.
Senior diplomats
Senior diplomats look at a possible win of Donald Trump highly concerned. They consider him as “unpredictable” and fear that he maybe closely ally with Turkey, while his policies in general could harm Europe. “Europe could be left alone with Ukraine, for examplee, not to mention the economic impact if Trump will follow an introvert economic policy,” a political analyst told KTG. the analyst stressed that no matter How strategic the Greek-US relations are, Greece is a part of Europe.”
