Traffic restrictions, public transport changes due to Athens Marathon on Nov 7-10

Traffic restrictions and changes in the public transport routes are in effect in downtown Athens as early as Thursday morning, November 7,  due to the 41st Authentic Marathon race and other smaller races over the weekend, November 9-10, 2024.

On Saturday, two consecutive 5km races will start at Amalias Ave at Syntagma Square to the Panathenaic Stadium between 5 p.m. and 8.25 p.m. Some of the streets affected include Vasilissis Amalias, Panepistimiou, Riga Feraiou, Akadimias, Vasilissis Sofias, Mesoghion, Irodou Attikou and around the Kallimarmaro Stadium.

On Sunday, the Marathon path will follow Marathonos Avenue to the Panathenaic Stadium through Mesoghion Ave, Michalakopoulou, Vasilissis Sofias and Irodou Attikou, among others from 9 a.m. to 17.45 p.m.

Also on Sunday, a 10km race will be held between 8.15 and 10.20 a.m. from Syntagma to the Kallimarmaro Stadium which will go through Vasilissis Amalias, Panepistimiou, Trikoupi, Akadimias, Vasilissis Sofias, Fidippidou, Mesogeion Avenvue, Michalakopoulou, Vasilissis Sofias and Irodou Attikou.

On the same day, a 1,200m children’s race will take place between 10.30 and 10.37 a.m. along Vasilissis Sofias, Irodou Attikou and the Kallimarmaro Stadium.

Cyclists, scooter users and pedestrians will not be allowed on the roadways runners will use, and they will also not be allowed to cross these streets during the race.

From Thursday, Nov 7, until after the races, traffic will be suspended on the entire length of Irodou Attikou and on its perpendicular streets up to the next block as well as on Vasileos Georgiou B between Rigillis and Irodou Attikou and on its perpendicular streets up to the next block.

From Friday, Nov 8, traffic will be suspended on Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue between Vasilissis Olgas Avenue and Eratosthenous in the direction of Evangelismos, on Ardittou between Vouliagmenis and Vasilissis Olgas avenues towards Evangelismos, and the entire length of Markou Mousourou and perpendicular streets up to the first block.

Extensive street closures and parking bans will be in force on Saturday and Sunday along all race routes.

Changes in the routes of buses, trolley buses and the tram will be in effect from Friday until the end of the races on Sunday, November 8-10, 2024. More information in Greek here.
