Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a Red Alert warning of rainstorm ALEXANDROS forecast to sweep across many parts of the country with a duration of 30 to 36 hours. Red Alert is the highest warning category regarsing dangerous weather phenomena.
A barometric low in the Ionian Sea and unstable air masses in the upper atmosphere will form the bad weather front ALEXANDROS with heavy rainfalls and storms accompanied by hail, a high frequency of lightning, strong winds and a noticeable drop in temperature in northern Greece.
The phenomena will be locally dangerous with the high risk of flooding and will last 30 hours, from the afternoon hours of Friday, November 15, until Saturday evening, November 16, 2024.
The largest volume of rainfall is forecast to fall in Thessaly (Central Greece), the Sporades islands, central and northern Evia as well as the northeastern parts of eastern Sterea. However, in the rest of the country the storms will also be very intense.
According to forecast of meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, snowfalls are forecast in the central and northern mountainous areas of Western Macedonia even at low altitude.
Temperature will drop significantly by 8 to 10 degrees Celsius in central, east and south mainland.

A. Heavy rains and storms are expected:
Friday 15-11-2024
a. From the pre-noon hours in the Ionian Sea. Weakening of the phenomena from late evening.
b. From midday hours in Epirus, western Central Greece and western and northern Peloponnese. Weakening of the phenomena from late evening.
c. From late afternoon (after 18:00 local time) in western Macedonia, Thessaly, Sporades, Evia and eastern Central Greece.
Saturday 16-11-2024
a. Until late afternoon (18:00) in Thessaly, Sporades and eastern Central Greece and until the evening hours (21:00) in Evia.
The phenomena are expected to be particularly intense in eastern Thessaly (prefectures of Larissa, Magnesia), the Sporades, central and northern Evia and temporarily in the northeastern parts of eastern Sterea (prefectures of Phthiotis, prefectures of Boeotia).
b. From the morning hours (02:00) until the evening hours (20:00) in the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
c. Until the morning hours (05:00) in the Cyclades.
d. From the afternoon hours until the night (18:00 – 24:00) in the western parts of Crete.
B. Strengthened northeasterly winds of intensity of 8 Beaufort and gusts of 9 B are expected to prevail in the northern Aegean Seas from the evening hours of Friday until Saturday night.
Strong north northeasterly winds of force 8 will also blow in the central Aegean from the midday hours of Saturday (16-11-2024).

The Civil Protection and the Fire Service have also issued warning urging citizens to avoid setting themselves in risk, to not cross streams either on foot or by car, to avoid basements, to keep sewage drains and water pipes clean and to follow authorities’ instructions.

A day earlier, it was a 10-minute rainfall that caused a chaotic situation in the streets of the Greek capital with power outages and train delays.
