One 16-year-old boy died, two of his sisters are intubated in ICU, while a third sister and his mother are hospitalized in a normal ward after what it seems a gas leakage in their home in village Magiko byi the city of Xanthi in north-eastern Greece.
The tragedy took place early Friday morning, when the mother went into their bedroom to wake them up for school.
They seemed asleep but she could not wake them up. She immediately called the Fire Service and the police, ambulances rushed to the family home and transferred the children and the mother to the hospital.
Despite doctors’ efforts, the boy passed away. Two girls aged 15 and 18, have been intubated and are being treated in ICU in what it is reported in critical condition. The third girl of the family, aged 20, and the 47-year-old mother are being treated in normal wards. Doctors are reportedly in process to decide whether the girls will be transferred to a hospital in Thessaloniki.
According to local media xanthinews.gr, authorities found that there was a suffocating environment in the basement where the children’s bedroom was and also that works had been done outside the house the previous day to install a LPG cylinder and a liquified gas tank.

State broadcaster ERT reported that a pellet stove was lit in the children’s bedroom.
Authorities have launched an investigation.
