Energy Ministry announces electricity subsidy for December

Greek Energy and Environment Ministry announced on Friday the electricity subsidy on household bills for the month of December.

The extraordinary support subsidy on household electricity bills for consumption in December is 1.5 cents per kWh.

This subsidy on household tariffs and for all services of the main and non-main residence, without income criteria and regardless of provider, are structured as follows:

For monthly consumption up to 500kWh, the subsidy is structured at 15 euros/MWh or 1.5 cents/kWh. This category covers 90% of households in Greece. It is noted that the subsidies concern consumers who are contracted to variable electricity tariffs.

For households included in the Social Household Tariff (KTO), the subsidy amounts to 35 euros/MWh or 3.5 cents/kWh for all consumption.

The total cost of the subsidy for December amounts to 20.5 million euros and is covered by the Energy Transition Fund.

It is noted that the weighted average price of the green tariff for the 3 largest suppliers in market share in Low Voltage (over 80% of household consumption), including the December subsidy, amounts to 141.7 euros/MWh or 14.17 cents/kWh.

In any case, it is recalled that electricity prices for the household consumer in 2024 are lower than in 2023, the Ministry noted.

  1. We have two homes and spend time in both of them, usually more than a month each time. Our electricity bills for each home are always between 50 and 60 euros a month. The thing is, I would expect the home we spend more time in to have a higher bill and the home we aren’t using to have a lower bill . . . but no, the bills are always between 50 and 60 euros each . . . can anyone explain why?
