Unexpected resignation of Greek PM’s chief economic advisor

The chief economic advisor to the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Patelis, announced his resignation in a post on social media on Monday.

Patelis has occupied this position for the last five years.

He said in his post that he had informed Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of his intention to step down from his role as the head of the premier’s economic affairs office at the end of the year.

He praised the “government’s economic achievement”, however, he did not mention any reasons for his resignation, not even the usual cliche, the “private reasons.”

what is also interesting is that he announced his resignation two days before the start of the debate for Budget 2025 in the Parliament and the voting on Sunday.

While no background on the resignation has leaked to the press so far,  some  media recalled that Alexis Patelis has often been targeted by high-ranking New Democracy officials who “accused” him of having played a leading role in the legislative regulation of marriage equality.

Fact is also that Patelis has been recently putting banks under pressure for interest rates, commissions and credit extension and he was threatened them that if they don’t adjust the premier would intervene.

PS It looks as if the banks won and Patelis lost…
