“No Helmet, No Fuel”: Campaign by Gas Stations in Greece

“No gasoline for motorcycle riders who do wear helmet!” Gas stations owners in Greece  as well as the Ministries of Health and Development plan a nationwide campaign.

The inspiration for the campaign came from the owner of a gas station in Kissamos, Crete, Emmanouil Rosoudakis, following the death of 17-year-old Ioannis Christodoulakis. The teenager lost his life in a traffic accident with a vehicle, stayed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Chania Hospital with severe head injuries and succumbed to his injuries two weeks later, on December 10, 2024.

Rosoudakis made his announcement that he will not refuel motorcycles independently from their size if drivers and co-passengers do not wear helmet. He urged his colleagues to do the same as well.

The announcement ultimately caused a huge sensation and became a source of inspiration from which many hope that something good will come out.

Within 24 hours after Rosoudakis call on his colleagues, the decision for the nationwide campaign “No Gasoline If You Don’t Wear Helmet” came after a meeting of the presidium of the Federation of Gasoline Sellers of Greece with the Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis who will support it.

How exactly the Ministries of Health and Development will participate in this campaign remains to be clarified, while it remains to be seen when the nationwide campaign will begin and its implementation by gas station owners, as well as how all those who do not use a helmet during their travels will react, motor news website motomag.gr wondered..

In addition, the legality of the project remains to be seen, as it is not the job of gas station employees to act as traffic police.

“Once again it seems that serious matters, such as education in the use of vehicles, are being exhausted by members of the government with communication tricks. I wish the State would do something serious and comprehensive for education on Greek roads,” motomag stressed.

PS following the Traffic Code and relevant regulations is apparently a nightmare for Greeks. and the whole issue is getting worse in the last 1.5 year…

  1. Bravo to him, simple common sense is the best way.

“In addition, the legality of the project remains to be seen, as it is not the job of gas station employees to act as traffic police.”

Since WHEN has it been a legal “thing” to not exercise your right, as a FREE individual, to refuse Service?

  2. In Argalasti (ktg, you know it), a young guy died today due a motorcycle crash. He and his mate did not wear a helmet. So this campaign is very important!

  3. Common sense is in short supply in Greece. That will probably never change, no matter the consequences. I couldn’t believe how aggressive and irresponsible Greek motorcycle riders are, swerving in-and-out of traffic, cutting lines, cutting people off. Don’t wear a helmet, but please don’t reproduce.

  4. It wont do much as long as the police doesnt fine them. How much is the fine for not wearing your belt in the car? double that and let the driver who basically is responsible for his passenger pay double That will help more than no fuel. the police will take your plates and lcense (which i think is illegal umless you committed a crime like being stone runk or go 50km faster than te limit) as well as write you a fine for not wearing your belt. Let them be consequent.
