Turkish man arrested for murder of betting store owner in south Athens

A 39-year-old Turkish man has been arrested for the murder of a 61-year-old betting store owner in Palaio Faliro, southern Athens, on Tuesday night.

The man who has meanwhile confessed to the murder, killed the store owner with 31 knife stabs and a bat, media reported.

Moreover, the man who had enter the country illegally had his asylum claim definitively rejected on October 22, 2024, according to the Migration Ministry.

The Turkish national was arrested in the early morning hours of Thursdayafter attempting to cash a stolen winning lottery ticket worth €4,700 at another OPAP store in Omonia in downtown Athens. He had reportedly snatched the ticket from the victim’s bag where he kept the daily revenues and the winning tickets.

When the ticket was scanned by the clerk at the Omonia betting shop, it triggered a notification, prompting police officers to respond immediately. They arrested him a few streets away from the scene.

Furthermore, surveillance footage has emerged from Tuesday showing the suspect apparently scouting the OPAP store near a tram stop just minutes before the killing.

The suspect is said to have told investigators that he stabbed the betting store owner after the latter assaulted him with a bat. He claimed further that he had a dispute with the owner when he wanted to buy a betting ticket but the owner refused the service saying he was closing the store.
