A total of ten people died from influenza and 21 deaths from Covid-19 were recorded in the week January 20-26, 2025, according to the epidemiological weekly report of the National Public Health Organization EODY.
The positivity in all tested samples for Covid-19 infection decreased compared to the previous week, according to the report.
The number of new admissions to hospitals for COVID-19 in the last week reached 382 (418 in the previous week).
At the same time, 8 (10 previous week) new intubations were recorded. The number of patients with Covid-19 infection who are hospitalized intubated is 25 (26 last week).
At the same time, 21 (21 last week) deaths were recorded in patients with Covid infection.
The sub-variants KP.3 and XEC of BA.2.86 are the predominant strains in detection. In week 33/2024, the first strains of XEC were detected, which has been showing increasing trends since early October. None of these strains has currently been associated with an increased risk of serious disease.
At the national level, the weighted viral load in urban wastewater is at low levels compared to historical data, showing a decrease compared to the previous week. More specifically, a decrease was recorded in all regions compared to the previous week, with seven of them showing a low level of viral load, two moderate and one high.
Influenza virus
Influenza positivity in the community (as estimated by the Sentinel Primary Health Care surveillance network) remains above the threshold indicating the onset of seasonal influenza activity (10%), showing an increase compared to the previous week.
The positivity of samples from the SARI surveillance network showed a decrease compared to the previous week.
13 (17 previous week) new serious cases with hospitalization in ICU were recorded.
At the same time, 10 deaths of patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded. These are 8 men and 5 women, with an age range of 33 to 83 years, and a median age of 60 years.
In addition, four serious laboratory-confirmed influenza cases with ICU hospitalization were retrospectively reported, two with admission date within the week of 02/2025 and two with admission date within the week of 03/2025, as well as two deaths with death date within the week of 03/2025.
In total, from week 40/2024 to week 04/2025, 97 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases with ICU hospitalization and 23 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded. From week 01/2024 to week 03/2025, the recorded deaths in serious cases with laboratory-confirmed influenza amount to 84.
Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
Positivity in the community (Sentinel PHC surveillance network) decreased, while an increase was recorded in the SARI surveillance network.
