National Tsunami Warning Center installs tide gauge on Santorini

The National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) of the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (GI/NAO) has installed a tide gauge on the northeastern coast of Santorini it was announced on Tuesday.

Following the increased seismic activity recorded in the last week between Santorini and Amorgos, the National Tsunami Warning Centre of the NOA took action by installing a tide gauge in a small fishing shelter on the northeastern coast of Santorini. It also delivered to the authorities information material regarding the operation of the NTWC, as well as general instructions with self-protection measures against the risk of tsunamis.

According to the announcement, the choice of this specific location, as close as possible to the epicenter of the ongoing seismic activity, has as its main objective to promptly record and monitor changes in sea level.

Greek seismologists appear again on Tuesday to disagree regarding the seismic activity and thus whether it is a ‘seismic swarm’ or an intense activity before a big earthquake of estimated 6 on the Richter scale.
