A 47-year-old man, who was hospitalized at the psychiatric hospital of Dafni in Haidari, western Athens, attacked and fatally injured a 44-year-old female patient.
The man killed the woman with a piece of broken glass in the early morning hours of Wednesday. With his clothes soaked with blood, he went to the nursing ward and informed the two nurses about his act.
The perpetrator fled and police has not managed to locate and arrest him until now, that is early afternoon Wednesday.
The man was admitted and had been hospitalized at the public psychiatric hospital of Dafni since November 2024, following a judicial decision as he had killed a female patient in the psychiatric hospital of Corfu in September 2023.
With a pen and a makeshift fork, the man had stabbed the 63-year-old woman 12 times in the neck, resulting in her death.
He was arrested, the court recognized his “unaccountability,” and ordered his admission to Dafni Psychiatry for 5 years.
President of Hospital Workers union POEDIN, Michalis Giannakos, told media that the victim in Dafni was admitted to the hospital on emergency duty on Tuesday evening due to use of substances.
Giannakos but also other personnel of Dafni pointed out the shortage of safety measures in the Psychiatric Hospital sayning “it is not possible for people who have demonstrated criminal behavior to be in the same area with patients who are hospitalized.”
They stressed that “a special annex must be created for these people. You can’t have them together with patients who have been admitted for other reasons.”
The perpetrators remains at large at 3 p.m. on Wednesday and it is not clear whether he has been hiding in the very large compound of the hospital or he has left and is wandering around in western Athens.
UPDATE:
Police arrested the fugitive perpetrator short before 6:30 p.m. He was arrested while he was walking on Athinon Avenue in Haidari, not very far from the Psychiatric hospital.
