Fire Service finds missing Tempi freight train cabin

The Greek Fire Service has found remnants of the missing cabin from the second engine of the freight train involved in the deadly Tempi collision in February 2023. The findings t hat were considered as “missing” for two years [!] are crucial for the investigation for the causes of the deaths of some 30 people due to fire and not the collision.

The discovery, two years after the deadly collision in Tempi, was made during an inspection at Koulouri in Larissa, where the wreckage has been stored since the first days after the collision and transported there.

According to local media eleftheria.gr, the cabin parts were found on Saturday morning, March 8,  (8/3) by firefighters from the Arson Crimes Division (DAEE) of the Fire Department and forensic experts. They were deployed in the area a day earlier.

MEGA TV reported that four parts of the freight train cabin, including a part of its roof, the headlight and the driver’s seat, have been found.

According to the recently published report by the National Organization for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety (EODASAAM), the specific cabin appeared to have been detached from the train vehicle and could not be located among the debris, except for a small part of the roof and the headlight, while the rest had been missing.

This debris is expected to be “assembled” in order to provide answers to the question of whether the deformation of the second engine was due to the collision with the first wagon carrying sheet metal or to combustion from the fire.

Pictures made public on March 3, 2025 by Vassilis Kokotsakis, lawyer of some victims’ families.

This fact “ignited” speculation that the “unknown flammable material” that caused the explosion was not being transported in the open wagons with the sheet metal, but it had been ” hidden” in this cabin.

The investigation at Koulouri will continue next week as investigators will try to . to expand the search to the passenger train’s dining car and the first-class passenger section.
