Conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proceeded to a cabinet reshuffle on Friday, the seventh since he came to power in 2019. For one more time, ministers remain in their posts or just changed to another ministry signaling that New Democracy does not have a robust arsenal to make bold moves and policy changes.
The reshuffle comes after the huge – and ongoing – protests for the 57 Tempi victims of the train disaster in February 2023. Protesters demand Justice, while the majority of Greeks is convinced that the government has from the very beginning and keeps trying even nowadays to cover-up responsibilities of officials and criticizing the role of Justice. Mitsotakis have claimed to have received the message, however, he got it wrong and did not replace the Justice Minister.
Interesting change on Friday, is the replacement of Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis with the passe partout minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis ex for Digital Governance and ex for Education.
Also worth noting is the replacement of Migration Minister with Makis Voridis, former State Minister and ND MP, known for his far-right past.
In crucial ministries, suche as Health, Justice, Development, Foreign Affairs, Defense, Labor, Tourism and rural Development the political leadership remains the same.
The reshuffle came under the fire of opposition parties from the whole political spectrum.
To make the long criticism short, it can be summarized down to one favorite Greek expression ironically hinting that a person – or in this case a political party does not change: ‘Aλλαξε ο Μανωλιός κι έβαλε τα ρούχα του αλλιώς meaning in plain English: Manolios [name] turned his clothes inside-out.
