Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made clear on Thursday in Paris that Greece is not among the countries prepared to send soldiers to Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters after the international summit meeting on Ukraine, the Greek PM said:
“Greece is not one of the countries that is ready to send troops to Ukraine, as part of an ‘alliance of the willing’. And it also considers that this whole discussion may be a bit divisive and not allow us to focus on the main thing, which is none other than how we will achieve at this moment that the war ends an hour earlier. And this can only be done through an initial ceasefire.”
He underlined the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine the soonest possible.
The Greek PM noted that “Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire which unfortunately Russia has not agreed to yet,” and said that pressure should be exerted on Russia to end its attacks of Ukraine, especially of critical infrastructure, in order for Ukraine to negotiate a just and viable peace.
He also mentioned that the leaders in Paris discussed the issue of security guarantees which some other countries may possibly be interested in providing. The Greek leader underlined however that it is common knowledge that the strongest security guarantee that could be provided would be “the strengthening of the Armed Forces of Ukraine itself.”
PS it should be recalled that a few weeks ago, a prominent MP from ruling New Democracy said that Greece should send soldiers to fight for Ukraine.
“We have reason to send soldiers to Ukraine. there is a Greek minority there of 100,000 induviduals. Because turkey said it would go, and we will be out?” ND MP and professor foe international Law, Angelos Syrigos posted on x.
Έχουμε λόγο να στείλουμε στρατεύματα στην Ουκρανία;
Στην περιοχή κατοικεί ελληνική μειονότητα 100.000 άτομα.
