The National Geological Museum, showcasing Greece’s mineral wealth and located within the Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (HSGME) in Thracomacedones suburb of western Athens, is now open to public.
The HSGME has created a new museum, with the aim of protecting, preserving, organizing and promoting the mineral wealth and geological history of Greece. The National Geological Museum is the first coordinated effort of the Greek state to promote the geological heritage of Greece.

Its collections from Greece are among the most extensive in the world. The museum is addressed to the general public as well as to the scientifically specialised public, with the presentation of important geological specimens of the Greek area (minerals, fossils, rocks, etc).

In the halls of the new museum, the evolution of geological research, the promotion of geological wealth, and the preservation of geological cultural heritage are showcased.

Visitors can also take a virtual tour of the historic mines of Lavrio, Chalkidiki, the unique geological phenomenon of Meteora, and the emerald mines of Naxos, and come into interactive contact with the microcosm of minerals and fossils, as well as with the most important moments in the history of the earth. Visitors gain insight into the lives and history of miners, as well as the use of minerals in daily life from ancient times to the present.

The National Geological Museum is open to visits by individuals, groups and school classes. The visit can also be arranged online at: tickets.gnmuseum
