4 children among 8 drowned when migrants boat sinks off Lesvos

The bodies of seven people have been recovered from a boat that was carrying migrants and sank off the island of Lesvos in the early morning hours of Thursday.

According to local media, two minors, a boy and a girl, as well as three women and one man were among the dead.

Later on Thursday it was reported that the number of dead had risen to eight. Seven bodies have been recovered, while a fourth child remains missing and is considered that it has drowned.

Another 23 migrants have been rescued, while Search and Rescue efforts to locate missing people are still ongoing. It was not immediately clear how many people may have been on the boat, although initial information claimed that 31 people were onboard.

The migrants are Afghan and Syrians.

The boat was detected by a patrolling coastguard vessel at about 2 am off the village of Sykamia.

At the time of the accident, the sea was calm with winds blowing with 3 Beaufort, a fact that leads authorities to suggest that it was a handling error that led to the boat sinking.
