A German tourist was found unconscious with multiple injuries in the Diktamos Gorge, in Chania region on the northwestern coast of Crete, on Monday morning.

The man approximately 50 years old, was crossing the gorge with a hiking group and had suffered a shoulder dislocation, local media reported.

According to state broadcaster ERT, a large-scale rescue operation was launched at 11:15 a.m., but strong winds—already sweeping through the area since Sunday—prevented the use of a helicopter for his immediate evacuation to the General Hospital of Chania.

This latest incident follows another hiking-related tragedy earlier this month, when a 60-year-old German woman lost her life after falling in a remote and rugged area on Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain.

Diktamos Gorge begins about 21 kilometers east of Chania, near the village of Katochori at an altitude of 300 meters, and stretches roughly 8 kilometers to the village of Faraggi, near Stylos, descending to 40 meters above sea level.

The hike through the gorge typically takes around three hours and is considered moderately challenging, with several steep sections and parts that require climbing, noted tovima.com.
