A ferry boat ran aground on a rocky islet in the Gulf of Evia early Tuesday evening. 105 passengers and 9 crew members on board. Evacuation by boats is currently in progress.
Open ferry boat “Panagia Paravouniotissa” was sailing from Nea Styra to the port of Agia Marina, when it run aground on the rocky islet Glaros and was immobilized.

The incident occurred ten minutes after the ferry left the port of Styra.
Private and fishing boats rushed to the scene helping to evacuate the passengers, while coast Guard boats followed.
Weather conditions in the area are considered as in favor of the rescuers’ efforts and the passengers’ evacuation. Among the 105 are many children as well as elderly.
The situation was assessed as serious and there is intense mobilization for the safe evacuation of the passengers.
So far, there are no reports of injuries, however, the rescue operation is still in full swing.
Passengers complained to Mega TV that there was no announcement by the ferry’s loudspeakers about what had happened causing panic, no help from the crew and that they grabbed life-jackets by themselves.
“We saw a maneuver by the captain and we said ‘What is he doing?’ We immediately heard the impact on the rocks. When it was time to evacuate, the captain said over the loudspeakers, ‘Get down and get into the boats.'” apassenger told Mega TV
Another one: “We heard a loud noise and didn’t know what happened. We were panicked. No instructions were given, we found the life jackets under the seats ourselves.”
“They do this route daily, how could they run aground?” other passengers told media.
Meanwhile, the first passengers have safely reached the port of Stira, Mega Tv reported.
According to latest information, the ferry has inclined and some water has leaked inside.

A passenger told Mega that they had to leave their luggage behind and he was told that the ferry will be towed and then he can have his car.
Investigators of the Coast Guard have approached the ferry to talk with the captain and find out the causes of the incident.
