Shipping company of stranded ferry referred to prosecutor, captain detained

The Greek Coast Guard has referred to the prosecuting authorities the shipping company of the stranded ferry boat off Evia early Tuesday evening and detained the captain for complying with the safety protocols. The ferry remains stranded still 15 hours after it struck a rocky islet and ran aground. It should be noted that the ferry is on the Nea Styra-Agia Marina route daily and the islet is visible.

According to a Shipping Ministry statement issued n Wednesday morning, the captain of the ferry Panagia Paravouniotissa failed to inform the relevant authorities after the vessel struck the rocky islet Glaros at around 6:50 pm on Tuesday. Instead, it was a passenger who alerted the coast guard, prompting a coordinated rescue effort.

Furthermore, the company has undertaken no action to have the ferry towed, still hours after the incident, and it remains stranded between the island of Evia and the mainland Greece, in the south of the Gulf of Evia.

With 105 passengers on board and 9 crew members the ferry ran aground just 10 minutes after it departed from Nea Styra port on Evia for the port of Agia Marina.

Passengers complained to media that there were no instructions and that they had to seek for life-jackets by themselves.

The passengers, among them many children and elderly, were evacuated by boats to Styra, with the coast guard to have arrived at the scene later.

The majority of passengers spent the night in Nea Styra, while other had to be transferred by buses to Marmara and Karystos.

According to the coast guard, 105 passengers, nine crew members, and 36 vehicles were on board. No injuries or marine pollution have been reported. The grounding reportedly caused minor water ingress and a slight list, officials said.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Salvage operations to refloat the vessel and transfer the vehicles are expected to begin shortly.
