A mortar, believed to date back to World War II, was discovered in a stream-bed in Palaio Faliro suburb of southern Athens on Wednesday morning.
The unexploded military shell was discovered by a local passing by who also immediately informed the authorities.
Police and a bomb disposal unit of the Landmine Clearance Battalion (TENX) of the Greek Army was deployed in the area.
Police cordoned off the residential area and halted traffic on Feakon Street, while the TENX unit inspected and carried away the device for neutralization.
State broadcaster ERT reported that the shell is believed to be a WWII-era mortar round. The streets in the area were given back to traffic when the operation was successful completed.
Palaio Faliro was one of the battle fields between the Allies and the Nazi occupiers during the WWII.
