Wildfire is raging in Keratea, East Attica: Locals evacuations, houses burned down (VIDs)

A wildfire is raging in Keratea, in south-eastern Attica, on Friday, forcing local authorities to evacuate residents and holidaymakers, as the strong winds blow with 7-8 Beaufort and gusts of 9 B fan the blaze again and again.

Live transmission on state broadcaster ERT shows houses on fire in a dark background due to the smoke. Reporters at the scene speak of suffocating atmosphere.

The fire broke out at 14:00 at empty lots and low brush in Manoutso of Keratea. It quickly spread due to the winds and moved to the virgin pine forest and in two hours started to burn down houses.

It is now near villages and settlements and threatens the many scattered houses as well as pens with farming animals and several animal shelters.

Ten people had to be helped to safety.

Short after 6 p.m., the Fire Service announced that an elderly man was killed at the fire – More information on a separate KTG post HERE.

A total of 190 firefighters are on site, with 7 forest firefighter units on foot, 44 fire trucks and a lot of volunteers and their cars. In addition 11 water-dropping aircraft and 7 helicopters.

In addition, Attica Region has provided large earthworks machinery and water trucks.

An emergency alert message was sent through <112> to residents of the Drosia and Harvalo Kerateas villages asking them to evacuate toward Anavyssos on the coast.

A house was burned down within a few seconds, tanea.gr reported in a video.

Meanwhile, traffic police has shut down traffic on the rural Keratea-Anavyssos road because of the fire, and calls on drivers to listen to directions and facilitate fire trucks coming through.

Another emergency message sent at 5:20 p.m. urged residents again to move toward Palaia Fokaia the coast.

The firefighters’ efforts to contain or limit the flames are very difficult due to the gale-force winds which are forecast to weaken to 5 to 6 Beaufort late at night and strengthened again as of Saturday morning.

It is worth recalling that wildfires break out in Keratea almost every summer!
