Chios without power as wildfire burns at least 150 electricity poles

Homes and businesses on the island of Chios in north-eastern Aegean Sea, will remain without power for several days, as the ongoing catastrophic fire has burned at least 150 electricity poles the restoration of which will require a long time.

Officials of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) said that the company’s first actions will focus on re-powering Volissos, a process that will require at least three to four days.

The restoration of power to coastal settlements and the villages of Paraparia, Potamia, and the other areas of Amani does not have a specific timeline.

According to some assessments, it will take over 7 to 10 days to fully restore electricity. As the fire continues to burn with open fronts, nothing rules out a worsening of conditions, politischios,gr reported.

Meanwhile, 40 HEDNO specialists from northern Greece are expected on the island to supplement the existing ones.
