A fire broke out on a passenger plane shortly after takeoff from the airport of Corfu on Thursday. It was forced to make an emergency landing at the airport of Aktion in western mainland.
This is the third such incident with a plane occurring in Corfu in the month of August.
The Boeing 737-800 of low-budget airline Smartwings took off at around 5 pm from Corfu with a destination in the city of Brno in the Czech Republic.
However, after a few minutes later and while the plane was at approximately 1,500 feet, a failure occurred in one of the engines that caught fire.

The Corfu airport “”Ioannis Kapodistrias” was set on alert.
The crew immediately followed the protocols to be implemented in for such cases and the plane, after staying for a short time at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet, made an emergency landing at Aktion airport, near Preveza.
All passengers and plane crew are reportedly safe and nobody was injured.
Locals around the airport of Corfu reported of a very loud noise during the explosion.
It is worth noting this is the third time such an incident has occurred with an airplane in Corfu this month.
On August 16, 2025, shortly after 8 p.m., the engine of a Condor plane caught fire, a few minutes after takeoff.
On August 19, 2025, a Boeing 757-300 aircraft operating the Corfu – Düsseldorf route with 250 passengers onboard encountered a problem with its engine that caught fire after takeoff. the plane made an emergency landing in Brindisi, Italy.
