A powerful earthquake rattled Greek capital Athens and the north-western Cyclades islands at 00:25 local time around 20 minutes after midnight, on September 9, 2025.
According to preliminary information by the Geo-dynamic Institute the earthquake occurred at at 00:25 local time between Attica and the island of Evia and had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. some foreign seismic institutes give the magnitude as 5.5 R.
Its epicenter was 4 km North-West of Nea Styra in the south of Evia and its focal depth was at 2.3 km.
It superficial focal depth was the reason that the tremor was particularly felt in Athens.
So far, there are no reports on injuries or material damages neither in Evia or in Athens or elsewhere.
However, it seems that people reported to EMSC earthquake application of strong shaking and damages.

Greek seismologists appear reassuring however, they warn that aftershocks are expected.
Head of the National Earthquake Planning and Protection, Efthymios Lekkas, told media that the area does not normally cause very big earthquakes.
Citing reports from local authorities in several areas in Evia and Attica, state broadcaster ERT reported that aside from the concern among the citizens, there are no reports of injuries of damages.
Nikos Drakogiannis, president of the Nea Styra community told ERT that apart from the broken windows of a store at the seaside, he received no other reports of damages.
He added that he was informed by the National Observatory of Athens that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 R.
PS I personally was sitting on the couch watching TV, when I felt the floor slightly moving first, a kind of deep noise and before I realized it was an earthquake, the whole living room, the couch, the books on the shelves started ratting. It was very strong and I was glad it was quick,
Needless to mention that the cats who were sleeping on the other couch jumped high and disappeared in zero time… Meanwhile, the younger cat came out of her hiding half an hour later and made a check tour in the apartment, while the older kitty is hiding still 50 minutes after the tremor.
I felt the earthquake too. I was already sleeping in my bed when suddenly the doors of my wardrobe started shaking and making noise. Started slowly and got more intense for a minimum of 10 seconds.
