An 11-year-old boy was hit by a car as he was walking back from school early Thursday afternoon in the northwestern city of Igoumenitsa. The young traffic victim died in hospital.
The boy was hit by a car driven by a 58-year-old woman as he was crossing the road after school on his way home. The boy was heading to his parents’ shop few meters away from the school building.
Panic prevailed at the accident scene, with the boy to be reportedly trapped under the wheels, while his shocked parents, who had rushed to the spot, were screaming in agony for their child.
The injured child was initially taken to Igoumenitsa emergency clinic and later transferred to Filiates General Hospital, where he died despite doctors’ efforts to keep him alive.
The driver has been detained for questioning, while the exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated.
