Organ donations hit record in Greece

Greece’s Health Ministry has been sending e-mails to citizens informing them about the benefits of the solid organ donations and calling on them to register as donors.

At a press conference, minister Adonis Georgiadis stated that one million e-mails to date have been sent from the National Transplant Organization since the beginning of the month.

In the emails, the Organization explains the benefits of transplants and the process, and includes a link included in the email, where citizens as solid organ donors.

The minister stressed that this is a “moral commitment” of the State, noting that in 2024 transplants in our country recorded a historic record and everything indicates that in 2025 there will be a new peak in organ donations.

The campaign is to be completed within the current week.

“Our goal is to multiply the number of donors and, at the critical moment, save lives,” the minister said.

Growing number of donors 2024-2025

2025 is evolving into a landmark year for transplants in the country, as Greece records a new historic record from deceased donors.

The Hellenic Transplant Organization (HTO) announced that, on October 6, the organ donation from the 111th donor of the year was completed, reaching — even before the end of 2025 — last year’s number, which was achieved only at the end of 2024.

The 111 donors of 2025 have already given life to 240 patients, surpassing the corresponding record of 238 transplants from deceased donors last year.

According to the Organization, this number reflects the radical change in culture surrounding organ donation in the country.
