Police in northern Greece have arrested two men in Thessaloniki suspected to have been involved in the murder of prominent Cypriot businessman and chairman of Karmiotissa FC, Stavros Demosthenous, in Limassol two weeks ago.
49-year-old Demosthenous was gunned down in his car near his home in Limassol, Cyprus, on October 17 and died on his way to the hospital.
Against the two suspects, Cypriot authorities had issued a European arrest warrant.
According to Greek media, authorities had information that the two, ethnic Greeks from Georgia, had fled to Thessaloniki after the murder. They had previously no contacts with authorities.
The mother of one of the arrested persons lives in Thessaloniki and the grandmother of the other in Katerini and it looks as if they came to Greece to hide.
It is not yet clear what role each of them played in the case that appears to be a contract murder and authorities are investigating whether one or both carried the assassination or they are acting as accomplices as well as possible links to the “Greek mafia.”.
