Athens Christmas Tree 2025 has been illuminated

Hundreds of Athenians and visitors flocked to Syntagma square in downtown Athens on Thursday evening to attend the ceremony where the Mayor of the Greek capital traditionally turns the lights on of the Christmas Tree.

Despite the rain the crowd watched the ceremony with open umbrellas and enjoyed the music program that followed.

The Athens Christmas Tree 2025 is a 19-meter-high evergreen fir tree, grown in a field with arboriculture, which took its place in the center of Syntagma Square.

Red and gold balls, impressive ornaments made of illuminated plexiglass in various designs, as well as 3,000 meters of bright lights, highlight the warm, joyful atmosphere of the days.

In total, 21,000 meters of garland, or 168,000 lights, will be placed in Syntagma Square, as well as on the fir tree.

After the holidays, the fir tree will be donated to the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) to be used as raw material for artistic wood carving projects for its students.

The wreaths on the columns and the hanging stars on the trees from last year’s decoration of the square are maintained this year, while a floor-standing illuminated Santa Claus will be a point of interaction with visitors who will be visually connected to Ermou Street.

The illuminated gate with the nutcrackers will be located there this year as well. The entire pedestrian street will be enriched with new garlands and hanging stars, as a continuation of the Syntagma tree. At the same time, a Christmas nativity scene will be placed in Mitropoleos Square.

From December 15, the fountain in Omonia Square will present water shows synchronized to music.

The festive lighting is of low energy consumption LED technology and is spread throughout the city. It includes a total of 78,000 meters of tree garlands, 2,113 decorative columns, 1,325 aerial ornaments, 11,933 meters of light tubes and 47 ground structures.

Throughout the festive days the Municipality of Athens offers a rich program for young and old to enjoy in several areas of the city.
