Second blackout on Athens Metro Line 3 in two weeks

The second incident of extensive traffic disruption on Athens Metro Line 3 of the route Piraeus Theater- Athens International Airport in two weeks, which is attributed to similar causes, is causing concern.

during the morning rush hour on Tuesday, the trains running on the Duk. Plakentias – Ethn. Amyna section of the line during the morning rush hour stopped at the stations, with the drivers asking passengers to get off the trains due to the traffic disruption.

According to passenger complaints, there was no announcement about the reason for the traffic disruption.

According to metro managing company STA.SY., traffic was interrupted at 8:00 in the morning on this section, due to a technical problem with the signaling. Traffic resumed shortly before 10:00.

In its latest announcement, the company stated that there was a problem in the power supply of the signaling system, the causes of which will be investigated by STA.SY.

A power outage caused widespread problems on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 3, with traffic being interrupted on the same section of the line. At that time, according to STA.SY., the resumption of services was delayed due to the time required to restart the systems, while other information indicated that the power outage caused damage to the signaling system that had to be restored.

In recent months, Metro Line 3 has been in the news several times due to problems with its routes and overcrowding at central stations. These problems are in most cases not acknowledged by STASY (the large number of passengers has even been cited as a cause), but no one disputed that the insufficient number of trains plays a role, most of which have been in service on the Metro network for more than 20 years.

As recently announced, a tender is expected by Hellenic Metro in early 2026 for the supply of 15 new trains, for the first time in over a decade, while the reconstruction of the older trains operating on the line, which will also include the installation of air conditioning, is also being promoted.

In addition, the major project to replace the rails on sections of the Metro that have been operating since 2000 will be ongoing until 2027. However, recent problems indicate that other actions may be required to resolve the problems facing the network after years of neglect during the economic crisis. source: athenstransport.com
