Improvements at the posts of Souda on Crete and on the island of Lefkada, worth 26 million euros in total, have been included in the Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Sectoral Program and the National Development Plan 2021-2025, it was announced on Monday.
At Souda, in Chania, the project will provide new port infrastructure over 8.18 hectares (81.8 stremmas) that include an extension of the ‘Adria’ pier and dredging works. After its completion, the port’s works will total nearly 72.7 hectares (727.2 stremmas). These works will improve the port’s capacity and operation as a basic transportation and tourism hub for Crete.
The Lefkada project, worth nearly 1 million euros of the 26 million euros, will improve lighting, and create water and power infrastructure pillars for yachts at the ports of Syvota, Spilia, and Vathy.
Commenting on the projects’ funding inclusion, Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that the interventions “enforce in practical ways the operational ability and security of our ports and improve infrastructures that support sailing, tourism, and local communities’ daily lives.” The government’s strategic purpose is to ensure ports fulfill current needs and act as levers of growth for each region, he stressed.
