A rare and impressive natural phenomenon made its appearance in the Greek sky, as the powerful G4 solar storm brought the Aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, to our country.
Particularly impressive were the snapshots of the Northern Lights over Chortiatis by Thessaloniki, northern Greece, and the island of Corfu.
During the night form Monday to Tuesday, January 19-20, the sky was “painted” with intense shades of red and purple, creating a scene that was reminiscent of northern latitudes and caused excitement and surprise in those who watched it.
The phenomenon, which is rarely visible so far south, was recorded in various parts of Greece. The images from Chortiatis, Thessaloniki, where residents captured the unique spectacle and shared them on social media, according to a post by Weather News Greece.

Similarly, in Corfu, shortly after midnight, the Northern Lights made their appearance over the island, giving the sky a unique color.

The geomagnetic storm hitting the planet is placed at level 4 on the five-point scale, explained expert Sean Doll of the American Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
It is expected to continue today, Tuesday, however, with less intensity. The ongoing solar storm was caused by a “strong solar explosion that occurred yesterday,” experts reported.
