A 56-year-old woman was killed in Ano Glyfada suburb of southern Athens on Wednesday evening during the rainstorm hitting the Greek capital. She was swept away by a powerful torrent of rushing waters and stones coming from the mountain.
The woman was walking home returning from work, when a torrent of powerfully rushing waters swept her away and trapped her under a car.
Neighbors who saw the incident alerted authorities, and soon time later they tired together with firefighters to free the woman or even lift the car, despite the fact that the rushing waters were hitting them furiously as they kept coming down from the mountain.

Speaking to media, eyewitnesses said that her body was under the car and “only her legs were visible. We could not do anything to save her.”
The teacher and mother of one daughter seemed to be initially alive but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
She is the second person to die during the bad weather front hitting the country, after a 52-year-old coast guard officer in Peloponnese a few hours earlier on Wednesday.
In similar incident also in Ano Glyfada, another woman was swept away by the torrent and stones coming down from the mountain. The woman escaped death, when two men jumped in the water and pulled her out and into safety.

The mayor of Glyfada, Giorgos Papanikolaou, expressed his condolences to the family of the 56-year-old woman, saying that yesterday’s storm was something that no resident of the area has ever experienced before.
In an effort to justify the unjustifiable, authorities and experts blame the “anarchic construction” in Ano Glyfada, at the southern foot of Hymettus Mt.
