Chief prison officer arrested for prison shooting

Police on Wednesday arrested the chief prison officer of Domokos Prison on charges of complicity in murder, following his alleged involvement in a suspected contract killing inside the high security penitentiary on February 15.

Antonis Papadatos, 42, was shot three times in the head Sunday evening inside the facility. He was serving a life sentence for the 2021 murder of hotel businessman Dionysis “Dimis” Korfiatis in Zakynthos.

The alleged shooter, Bulgarian national S.R., known as “Razvan,” is serving life for the October 2018 murder of Greek-Australian John Makris outside his home in Voula. The prison chief guard and possibly another inmate, Albanian national Alket Rizaj, were present during the incident.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. in a room without security cameras – described by police sources as the prison’s only “blind spot” – typically used for meetings, daily kathimerini reported.

According to an initial account from inmate eyewitnesses, Papadatos entered the office armed with a revolver and appeared to be attempting to shoot the chief prison officer. Two other inmates – an unnamed Bulgarian serving a life term for the 2018 murder of Greek‑Australian businessman John Macris and Alket Rizai, convicted of murder – were present. Those inmates, according to the account, disarmed Papadatos and shot him as they sought to protect the officer.

But the investigative magistrate in Fthiotida who is handling the case was not convinced by this account. On Tuesday, the chief prison officer was dismissed from his job, according to a relevant announcement on Diavgeia government website.

PS I had no idea that criminals and prison officers meet for a Sunday chat with tea and biscuits…
