The Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) has suspended operations on the Odontotos rack railway between Diakopto and Kalavrita in Peloponnese following recent landslides.
The suspension will remain in effect until conditions are reassessed and “the necessary geological studies are carried out in the area surrounding Mount Chelmos, in cooperation with the competent local authorities,”a statement said on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

The rack railway has been facing a lots of problems where passengers have been often stranded also in inaccessible areas in the last half year. The problems have been caused not only due to landslides but also due to lack of maintenance and modernization of the whole system, as workers have stressed in the recent past.

According to OSE, intense natural phenomena in recent days have caused large and dangerous rocks to fall onto the tracks from the surrounding forest of Mount Chelmos.
A preliminary investigation into the potential risks to the network has been underway since last year, the findings of which are still pending.
The OSE said it has already implemented increased measures to continuously monitor natural phenomena on the Odontotos network and to maintain the infrastructure in a safe and suitable condition.

The Hellenic Train has advised passengers who have already purchased tickets that they will be refunded according to the method of purchase (cash or credit card), in line with the company’s refund policy.

Not surprising given the terrain and the amount of rain / snow that has fallen recently. One of the great attributes of the scenic railroad is the fact that it goes through such a rugged, remote landscape. I’ve taken it down and back from Kalavrita, and would recommend a trip to anyone who hasn’t had the chance. It’s truly a wonderful experience.
