Authorities in Crete arrested a Polish national on charges of spying on Souda bay naval and air base that is used by US forces.
The 58-year-old man has been taking pictures of warships entering the Souda bay and sent them to Poland, state-run news agency amna.gr reported citing police sources.
The arrestee denies the charges.
His mobile phone, on which pictures of the warships were found on his mobile phone that has been confiscated, along with other electronic devices, which will be examined at the forensic laboratories of the Greek Police.
The Polish man had been lately living in a caravan in Marathi.
On Friday morning, extensive searches in the caravan are expected to be carried out in the presence of a prosecutor.
He was reportedly placed under close surveillance by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and was arrested by police forces on Thursday afternoon.

According to local media, he arrived in Greece and in Crete four months ago with his van that has Polish license plates and settled in Souda.
He is scheduled to appear before the public prosecutor of Chania later on Friday.
It should be recalled that both Greece and Poland are members of the European Union and the NATO.
The arrest comes two weeks after the arrest of a Georgian national of Azerbaijani origin suspected on espionage. He had spent some time on Crete at the time the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford was there. The 36-year-old man was arrested before leaving the country.
