Greece’s Risk Assessment Committee convened on Tuesday placed seven regions under a state of high mobilization – RED CODE – on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1-2, 2026.
The decision follows the Emergency Weather Warning Bulletin issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) warning of Hazardous Weather Phenomena and forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, possible localized hailstorms, strong winds, and snowfall in mountainous areas on these two days.
The seven regions under RED CODE are:
- Attica
- Central Greece
- Thessaly, including the Sporades islands
- Peloponnese
- South Aegean
- -7. the Regional Units of Imathia and Pieria in the Region of Central Macedonia.
In this context, municipalities and regional authorities in the above areas are called upon to immediately convene their Local and Regional Civil Protection Coordination Bodies.
According to the committee’s scientists-convened by the Secretary General for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou – heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast:
a. In the Ionian Islands from the early morning hours of Wednesday
b. In eastern Peloponnese, eastern Central Greece, Evia, Thessaly, and the islands of Sporades from late Wednesday morning until late at night
c. In Attica from early Wednesday afternoon until late at night
d. In the islands of Cyclades (mainly the northern parts) and the islands of the eastern Aegean (from Chios southwards) from the Wednesday afternoon until late at night
e. In the islands of Dodecanese from Wednesday afternoon onward
f. Very strong southeasterly winds will prevail in the central and southern Aegean reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort, and locally up to 10 Beaufort in the Dodecanese.
As noted in the announcement, in areas at risk of landslides during the severe weather – especially where such incidents have occurred in the past – citizens are advised to be particularly cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
According to current legislation, drivers are required to carry winter traction aids (snow chains or equivalent) in their vehicles.
The Risk Assessment Committee will convene again on Wednesday morning.
