Patient in Athens Psychiatric facility kills roommate

A psychiatric patient brutally killed a roommate in the biggest public facility Dafni in western Athens on Wednesday morning.

The 48-year-old perpetrator had strangled his 59-year-old roommate following an intense argument between the two patients.

According to initial information, the incident occurred at 03:30 in the morning inside the hospital ward under circumstances that are still unclear.

The victim was found unconscious by hospital staff, while police and ambulance service were immediately notified.

Doctors could not revive the victim.

The perpetrator was arrested soon after the crime by police officers who rushed to the scene.

A preliminary investigation has been ordered into the incident and the causes and the patient’s history are being examined.

It is not the first crime within the Attica Psychiatric Hospital Dafni.

In February 2025, a 47-year-old man, who was hospitalized in the public facility, brutally attacked and fatally injured a 44-year-old female patient in a different ward.

On social media, Greeks blame the under-staffing of public hospital facilities stressing that there are usually two nurses per shift for over 30 patients.
