“Greeks Contaminate With AIDS on Purpose”? Ops! No Evidence, Just a ‘Feeling’…

A week ago, the president of the Greek Society of Study and Treatment of AIDS-  Infectious Diseases Marios Lazanas claimed that because of economic deprivation, some drug addicts seek to get infected with HIV to get the allowance of  700 euros given by the welfare state to HIV-positive! The shocking statement did not receive wide publicity in Greece, for the simple reason that Lazanas was not able to  presented any evidence to confirm the unprecedented complaint.

A few days later German weekly magazine Focus (Greeks contaminate with AIDS for the shake of allowances)  and populist daily BILD (On Purpose: Greeks contaminate with AIDS Virus) reported on Lazanas’ statements in the Greek media. When the issue became internationally public, Lazanas saw himself forced to withdraw his claims -most likely shocked by the ‘sensation’ he created himself.

On Tuesday morning, Lazanas appeared in a Greek private television programme and corrected his own claims admitting he had no concrete evidence but that he just transported the ‘feeling’ from the flowing atmosphere.”  To Proto Thema daily, Lazanas stated that

“Theoretically, [these HIV inflectional contamination] could still be there, in isolated cases, but it cannot be proven.”

To dispel the caused impression, the chairman of the Society for the Study and treatment of AIDS noted that none of the nine users of  intravenously toxic substances with recent HIV infection who have been admitted to hospital Corgialenos-Benaki in 2011 has  officially declared the deliberate contamination with the aim to get the HIV-allowance.

Lazanas ad made the connection of economic poverty and intentional HIV-contamination in the context of an interview to World AIDS Day on November 22nd.  The increase of HIV infection among drug addicts increased by 1,260% within a year. The increase is attributed to social and economic conditions, prostitution, unprotected sex and especially the sharing of contaminated needles and syringes among users.

And BlahBlahBlah and BluhBluhBluh. I wonder if they all lived happily ever after: The HIV-infected drug addicts because they had their names cleared of exploiting state funds accusations, and Marios Lazanas who is still president of the Society. No, he didn’t resigned. Why should he, you said?
