Bomb in downtown Athens: Was the target a prosecutor?

Who was the target of the bomb that exploded on Wednesday night in Exarchia district of central Athens?A prosecutor, a policeman or a bookstore? Prior to the explosion, two warning phone calls were made to daily Efymerida ton Syntakton and to news website Zougla.gr.

According to Greek media,  the bomb was placed in the private car of  a high-ranking policeman doing service at the police station of Exarchia, the car was parked in front of the bookstore “Free Thought” selling books with extreme-right content. On the first floor of the building resides Appeals prosecutor Georgia Tsatani, who has dealt with big legal cases like the Vatopedi scandal about land plot swaps or the powerful businessman and banker Andreas Vgenopoulos .

It was Tsatani’s lawyer who revealed that the prosecutor had recently requested increase of security measures but that the state had reduced them instead.

The explosion caused damage to the bookstore, to parked vehicles and smashed buildings windows.

The anonymous caller had warned of the bomb explosion half an hour earlier saying that “it was not a farce” and that that police should be informed “otherwise police would collect bodies from the windows.” The first call was at 10:15 pm to Zougla.gr, the second at 10:20 pm to daily Efsyn. The bomb exploded at 10:45 pm.

Police mobilization was immediate, they cordoned the area and were still calling on passersby to leave the area and on residents to remain inside their homes, when the bomb exploded.

Short before 12 noon Thursday, the Greek urban guerilla organization “Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire” claimed responsibility saying that the target was the Appeals prosecutor.
