A 5.5R earthquake and several aftershocks 4.9-3.2 had the residents of Ioannina and surrounding areas to spent the night on the streets.
The main earthquake of 5.5R occurred at 23:14 Saturday night with epicenter the village Pogoni, 12km north-west from the city of Ioannina in Epirus, North-Western Greece.
The earthquake lasted about 30 seconds, a roar preceded the tremor. The focal depth was at 5 km.

The earthquake was followed by six aftershocks measuring 4.1 – 3.2 R that occurred within 26 minutes.

As the tremors continued, the concerned residents rushed to the streets. Many families packed children and elderly in their private vehicles with the effect that traffic jams occurred in the main roads.

At 3:30 am, another earthquake stroke, this time with 4.9R. Young and old rushed again to the streets and they spent the whole night there, until the aftershocks weakened.

Due to the aftershocks, rocks fell on the mountainous roads of the area.

So far, no injuries or severe material damage has been reported.

According to seismologists, the several aftershocks allowed the energy to diffuse.
The major earthquake was felt across Epirus, the Ioanian islands, Aitoloakarnania and Larisa.
