A local high school in Chortiatis in Thessaloniki and the Greek Federation of Unions of People suffering from Diabetes have been at odds over the Federation describes as a “racist incident” against a student suffering from diabetes.
Based on the student’s and the mother’s denouncement the Diabetes Federation issued a statement saying that
a school teacher expelled the student from the class because of insulin measurement and insulin shots in front of the other students.
According to the statement the teacher had the diabetic student “thrown out of the class” claiming that measuring the insulin levels and performing with insulin shots “would distract other student’s attentions and pushes them in the use of drugs.”
The Federation speaks of “racist behavior” on the teacher’s part and of “social exclusion” of the student from the class and other school activities, negative impact on the soul of the diabetic student.
The director of the school vehemently rejected the allegations, insisting that the teacher did not ban the student form the class but only made a recommendation.
The director described the allegations as “false and malicious” and underlined that there was another student with diabetes “but we never had problems” with his behavior. The director claimed that the student involved in the incident was “seeking the attention of teachers and co-students.”
The Federation offers to go to the school and inform teachers and students about Diabetes and destroy prejudice about this sensitive group of the society.
PS are we nuts?
