After Imia claims, Turkey forbids Greece’s military exercises in the south Aegean

A few hours after the statements of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu. that “Imia is Turkish territory,” Ankara issued a NOTAM demanding the demilitarization of the island of Kasos.

In the NOTAM A5446/16 issued on December 1st 2016, Ankara claims that Greece had no right to perform military exercises south of the island of Kasos in the south Aegean Sea as the island was a ‘demilitarized zone according to the Lausanne Treaty.’

The Turkish NOTAM refers to Kassos with a Turkish name: Coban

Ankara argues that one of the three regions that Greece had bound in order to conduct military exercises with NOTAM A2646/46 including the area south of Kasos were demilitarized areas and they should not be included in the planning of exercises conducted by the Greek Armed Forces.

Ankara cites the Treaty of Lausanne, which the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been strongly putting in question in the last few months.

To the new Turkish claims, Athens responded asking Ankara to decide “whether international agreements were above power plays in internal politics or not.”

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos from nationalist Independent Greeks (ANEL) described the Turkish provocations plain and simple as “Stupid!”

He invited the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs and Defense to visit some small islands in the Aegean Sea near the Turkish borders on Monday.

Kasos & the Lausanne Treaty

Kasos is one of the Dodecanese islands and far away from the Turkish coast.

On 12 May 1912, during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-12, after the so-called “Battle of Cassos” that took place on 29 January 1912, the island was occupied by the sailors of the Italian Navy ship Regina Elena.

With the Treaty of Lausanne of 1923, Kasos joined the other islands of the Dodecanese in the Italian possession of the Italian Aegean Islands, and was ceded by Italy to Greece with the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947. The island formally joined the Kingdom of Greece on 7 March 1948 together with the other Dodecanese islands.

A Notice to Airmen (*NOTAM) is a notice filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the safety of the flight.

PS now it’s time to recapitulate all treaties from 1821 until today letter by letter, comma by comma.

  1. Cretan islands! Very close are some of the “16 islands” they’re wanking about since years like Koufonisi and Gavdos.
Anyway on Sunday comes Steinemeier and he brings some secret German nukes for island protection, it’s called Aegaen SDI
