A human story, a Christmas story in Greece of economic crisis and hardship. Christmas’ Eve in village Mesochorio in Heraklion, Crete.
A boy and a girl go from home to home and sing the Christmas Carols. When they knock at the door of one of the village homes, an old lady comes out. The siblings cheerfully sing the Kalanda praising the Jesus’ birth.
When the time comes for the little reward, the old lady tells them, she can give them only sweets as she has no money. “I will give you only sweets, I have no money.”
Without a second thought, the boy and the girl give to the woman all the money they had collected from singing the Carols.
A little later, the old lady went to neighbor’s home and returned the money to the children’s mother.

This is exactly why I get so angry with my friends in the UK who insist on blaming the economic crisis on “Greedy Greeks”. Christmas is alive and well and living not just on Crete but in every hearth and every home in Greece. God bless you all.

You’re not alone…I get VERY upset with my fellow Germans for thinking/talking that way, too. Germans especially have NO right to do that whatsoever! Alas, they’re still listening to the nonsense coming from the government too much and the media isn’t helping things either…so I try to open their eyes as best I can. This blog is a big help to me, am very thankful for it.
