Wearing carnival masks, a group of some thirty people hurled molotov cocktail bombs at the headquarters of Greece’s ruling party left-wing SYRIZA at Koumoundourou Square in downtown Athens on Sunday. One police officer was injured.
According to police, the group threw to or three petrol bombs that caused damages to two cars parked outside the building, blackened walls and holes in window panes. Οne of the cars was totally burned down.

At the time of the attack, a riot police squad was reportedly outside the building.
One police officer was injured in the foot, another was taken to the hospital due to tachykardia.
SYRIZA issued a statement saying among others “today’s murderous attack at the offices of SYRIZA is a blow against Democracy.Republic. The bullies did not even hesitate to endanger human lives, they have no relation to either the popular movement nor with any ideology. They are people of the underworld, completely marginalized.”
Police has detained 21 people.
UPDATE: Police detained a total of 41 people. 37 were released on Monday, the rest was arrested for crimes not in connection with the petrol bombs attack.
Media reported that there was no riot police squad at the time of the attack, but only the usual police guards as well as motorcycled unit of the police that rushed to the party headquarters after being informed of the attack.
