The mayor of Antipaxos raised serious doubts that Hollywood start Will Smith and his family gathered twenty two bags of litter from several beaches of the island as daughter Willow Smith had posted about. The mayor implies that the story is exaggerated.
“That’s exaggerated!” mayor Spyros Vlahopoulos told a Greek lifestyle magazine on Friday, after posts of Will Smith’s daughter, Willow Smith, on her Instagram account went viral – at least in Greece.
“This can’t be true, the Smiths went to the most inaccessible beach,” the mayor stressed.
Saying that the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos has a total of more than 100 small and large beaches, Vlahopoulos pointed it out ironically that “from all these beaches, the family chose to visit the most inaccessible one, by coincidence.”
He underlined that this specific beach is located at the Adriatic Sea, where there are floating landfill islands ‘that can be swept way by the winds at any time.”
Mayor Vlahopoulos said further that they frequently collect garbage from Antipaxos and also check the beaches. “From the whole island, we have never collect more than 6-7 litter bags,” he told E TV magazine Tatiana Live.
Τhe mayor wondered wondered “How can this girl collect 22 litter bags, where did she find these the 22 bags, this number is unbelievably exaggerated.”
He claimed from the pictures Willow Smith uploaded on the Instagram account, he “could not recognize the beach” on the island he knows as well as his pockets.
Three days ago, Will Smith’s sixteen-year-old daughter Willow, uploaded pictures from the action to collect litter from three beaches on Antipaxos, in the Ionian Sea.
Willow Smith expressed concerned about the environmental pollution.
“I saw seagulls dead on their backs, from chocking on tiny slivers of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials,” she wrote and described how she and her family helped clean up the beaches collecting “22 trash bags full of plastics and urban debris.”
PS Apparently the mayor was offended from the images that shred a negative light on the island.
I hope the Smiths have saved the receipt showing that they bought 22 trash bags. 😛
Typical !! Instead of saying thanks the Mayor feels politically threatened and his chair will be waggling as this information is used at the next elections.
The fact of the matter is that they collected a lot of rubbish, that is not necessarily thrown in the sea by Greeks but by anybody, passing ship, fishermen and possibly ferries.
Whatever is thrown into the sea will, at some point in time, resurface on a beach !
Shame on the Mayor for not showing some appreciation for the efforts.
Of course some people will claim that this action was just for the media effect by the Smith family BUT it was only on her personal Instagram account as far as I know the rest has been blown up by the Greek media !
Why didn’t the Mayor just say “BRAVO” to Will Smith & his family.
“It must have been the strong winds which blew the rubbish there”
“We thank the Smith family for being such good global citizens in taking it upon themselves to tidy up”
“Well done to the Smith family for their conscientious efforts in cleaning up the mess that the tide brought in”
