Chalkidiki: Camping gas explodes inside tent, 5 injuries

Panic in Kavouropetres, Chalkidiki, when a bottle of camping gas exploded inside a tent on Saturday. The father and one of the children of a 5-member family of Serbian tourists suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to a hospital in Thessaloniki. A second child has multiple injuries. The mother was slightly injured in hands and legs, a third child suffered minor injures.

The incident occurred Saturday noon in the forest of Kavouropetres, a popular destination for  many local and foreign tourists, sunbathers and campers.

“The tent was on fire, the parents were calling for help, the children were crying,” media report.

Ambulance and the fire brigades were called, the most cool-headed among the campers managed to extinguish the fire.

The explosion did not spread to beyond the tent where the camping gas exploded, the director of Fire Brigades in Chalkidiki told media.

The 40-year-old father has suffered burn injuries at 30 percent of his body and had respiratory problems, however, his life is not at risk. Together with the 8-year-old daughter, he was flown to a hospital in Thessaloniki.

The 40-year-old mother and two children were taken also to a hospital in Thessaloniki per ambulance.

On Monday, media reported that the father attempted to cook his coffee inside the tent, then the camping gas canister exploded.

After the incident, tourism bodies in Chalkidiki ask from police to ‘combat the phenomenon of illegal free camping’ in the area.

According to media reports, authorities will file charges against the parents for illegal camping.

PS the problem is not the free camping
