EU to continue use name “FYROM” until Macedonia Agreement fully implemented

The European Commission and European institutions will continue to use the name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” for Greece’s northern neighbour until the agreement signed by Athens and Skopje on Sunday is fully implemented, a spokesperson for European Commission Vice President and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said on Monday.

According to Maya Kocijancic, “there are still several steps that must be carried out before its completion. In our official communication, we will continue to refer to this country as FYROM and this is what we are doing in all our announcements until now.”

“Until the full implementation of the agreement by both sides, we will continue to refer to the country in question by the name FYROM, which is the name with which it joined the United Nations,” she added.

At the same time, the European Commission had apparently problems with whith-name-shall-I-use and published a graph to hail the agreement on Sunday without using not the countries names but the countries’ capitals names. Which is not usually.

Skopje and Athens make us all Europeans proud of the capacity to find through diplomacy and dialogue a win-win solution on the name issue that was long-standing problem for too many decades.
