Thessaloniki: Racists throw two participants of ThessPride into the sea

A racist attack against members of the LGBTO community in Thessaloniki took place on Saturday evening during the Pride Parade ThessPride. A group of three to four people, verbally attacked two ThessPride participants and threw them into Thermaikos Gulf. The two men were rescued by citizens and the Greek Coast Guard.

According to local media reports, the victims were separated from the main crowd of the parade. The victims are a 35-year-old  Greek and a 45-year-old Brazilian man, who was also holding a rainbow flag.

Walking along the promenade, a group of men approached them shouting “You and your minions will die!” Then the attackers threw first the Brazilian and then the Greek into the sea.

The two men did not suffered any injuries and testified to police.

Short time later and in a nearby area, Greek police arrested four young men, aged 16, 18, 21 and 22. They were arrested for beating a 17-year-old migrant from Pakistan. Preliminary investigation proved that the four had beaten the migrant. According to Skai TV, police investigates whether there is connection to the two racist incidents.

The march, the seventh of its kind organized by the LGBTQ community in Thessaloniki has attracted more than 5,000 participants.
